About the Exhibition

In the most comprehensive exhibition of Whitfield Lovell’s work to date, Whitfield Lovell: Passages features drawings, assemblages, and installations that focus on African American history and raise questions about identity, memory, and the heritage of the United States.

A 2007 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship “genius grant” recipient, Lovell makes drawings inspired by photographs of unidentified African Americans taken between the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 60s.
