February 7 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm
AMFA Collectors Group Members are invited to join Dr. Catherine Walworth, Jackye and Curtis Finch, Jr., Curator of Drawings, and art collector Neil K. Rector for a chat about his collection of post-1960 Hard-edge geometric abstract art, including Op Art and color-based painting. Drinks and light bites will be provided.
This branch of Rector’s collection (one of Rector’s six collecting areas) is one of the most comprehensive of its kind, and several of his works were included in the historic 1965 exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Rector has shared his collection through national and international exhibitions and museum donations for 25 years, loaning work to more than 75 museums and donating work to 20. He is an endlessly interesting collector whose unique collecting strategy leads him to often under-explored areas of art, while he affectionately personalizes his experiences with art and artists.
Through his interest in unofficial postwar artists working under Soviet authoritarianism, Rector became a founding member of Tate Modern’s Russia and Eastern Europe Acquisitions Committee (REEAC) and was honored by the Hermitage Museum Foundation in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2012.
